Cozy cloud cardigan
Wrap yourself in your own Cozy Cloud ♡
Soft and stylish, this cardigan is perfect for slipping into when in need of some extra coziness. It will keep you warm in your nook at home and can serve as a light coat during a walk.
The cardigan is knitted from the top down using a seamless raglan construction. Wide sleeves add a touch of extra coziness. The side edging of the cardigan is knitted at the same time with the body.
This pattern will work great with any super bulky yarn. It can be adjusted to other yarn thicknesses as well.

Notes
- The cardigan is knit from the top down. With this approach you can adjust the length of the body and sleeves by trying the garment on while still in the knitting process.
- I used magic loop method for knitting 2 sleeves at a time, but you can knit them one at a time. Use magic loop, a set of dpns, or any other desired method for knitting small rounds.
- The neat braid-like trim of the sweater is created by the slipped first stitches. In each row, the first st is slipped as if to purl wyif, and the last st is knitted..
- Raglan and the neckline increases are made on RS.
Pattern
COLLAR
The neckline of the cardigan is the ribbon-like collar.
It is started with the two-sided cast on and knitted in two directions which later become the right and the left edge of the front of the cardigan.
Measure appr. 15-16.5’/4.5-5m from the first ball of yarn you’re going to use. You can wind it in a small ball, but don’t cut it off the main ball.
With the larger needles, cast on 8sts using two-sided cast on technique - Judy's Magic Cast On (4sts on each needle).
Check that when you’re facing the RS of the casted on stitches with the needles pointing upwards, the main yarn ball is to the right and the additional yarn ball is to the left:
Place the stitches from the right needle onto a stitch holder.
Start working with the stitches from the left needle and the additional ball of yarn.
R1 (RS): k2, p1, k1
R2 (WS): sl1wyif, k1, p2
R3-R17: knit each RS row as R1 and each WS row as R2 (stop after completing the RS row).
Place the stitches onto a stitch holder.
Pick up the second part of the stitches from the cast on to the needles.
Start working from the main ball of yarn.
R1 (WS): p2, k2
R2 (RS): sl1wyif, p1, k2
R3-R17: knit each WS row as R1 and each RS row as R2 (stop after completing the WS row).
Now we are ready to pick up the stitches along the collar.
Position your knitting so that you face its RS as on the picture below.
Current stitch distribution:
- 4sts on the left needle with the main ball of yarn at its beginning
- 35 rows of the collar (17 rows from each right and left side + the cast on row)
- 4sts on the stitch holder and what’s left ot the additional yarn ball.
Knit using the main ball of yarn.
Stitches in square brackets correspond to the right and left ribbed edge of the front of the cardigan. It’s recommended to put additional edge markers (EM) to mark it for making pattern memorizing a bit easier.

SEPARATING THE SLEEVES
Prepare two pieces of waste yarn appr. 20”/50cm long each.
Next Row (RS): [sl1wyif, p1, k1, p1, sl EM]; k until 1 stitch to M, sl1wyib, remove M {front right};
place the next 35 (37, 39, 41)sts on a piece of waste yarn, remove M {right sleeve};
slip the last stitch from the right needle back to the left needle, ssk; k until 1 stitch to M, sl1wyib, remove M {back};
place the next 35 (37, 39, 41)sts on a piece of waste yarn, remove M {left sleeve};
slip the last stitch from the right needle back to the left needle, k2tog; k until EM; [sl EM, (p1, k1)x2] {front left}.
Current stitch distribution: 35 (37, 39, 41)sts - both right and left sleeve; 93 (99, 105, 111)sts - body.
BODY
R1 (WS): [sl1wyif, k1, p1, k1, sl EM]; p all sts until EM; [sl EM, k1, p1, k2]
R2 (RS): [sl1wyif, p1, k1, p1, sl EM]; k all sts until EM; [sl EM, (p1, k1)x2]
Repeat R1-2 until 2”/5cm to the desired length of the cardigan. Stop after completing the WS row.
For the sample knit there were 56 rows of Stockinette total.
RIBBING
Switch to the smaller needles.
The next row (R1) increases the number of stitches to keep the bottom of the cardigan from tightening in the balloon-like shape. This step can be skipped if desired - in this case proceed directly to R2.
R1 (RS): [sl1wyif, p1, k1, p1, remove EM]; (k1fb, k1, p1)x 28 (30, 32, 34) times or until 1 stitch to EM, k1; [remove EM, (p1, k1)x2]. 121 (129, 137, 145)sts on the needles.
R2 (WS): sl1wyif, (k1, p1)x until 2 last sts, k2
R3 (RS): sl1wyif, (p1, k1)x until the end of the row
R4-7: repeat R2-3 two more times.
R8: as R2.
R9 (Bind Off rather tightly): k1, (slip st back to left needle, k2tog tbl)x until 1 stitch is left. Video tutorial for this bind off is available here.
Cut the yarn leaving an appr. 6”/15cm tail. Pass it through the last loop and tighten.
SLEEVES
The sleeves are knit in the round. I used the magic loop method for knitting 2 sleeves at a time, but you can knit them one at a time as well. Use magic loop, a set of dpns, or any other desired method for knitting small rounds
Use directions below to knit each of the sleeves.
Transfer 35 (37, 39, 41)sts from the waste yarn to the larger needles. Place the last and the first stitch of the sleeve so that they are together on the first needle (they will be kit together).
Distribute sts on the needles as follows:
For the Magic Loop:
Needle 1: the last & the first stitch + 16 (17, 18, 19)sts; Needle 2: 17 (18, 19, 20)sts; BOR marker.
For the dpns:
Needle 1: the last & the first stitch + 7 (8, 8, 9)sts; Needle 2: 9 (9, 10, 10)sts; Needle 3: 8 (9, 9, 10)sts; Needle 4: 9 (9, 10, 10)sts; BOR marker.
R1: k2tog the last and the first stitch of the sleeve, k until the end of the round.
R2: k all 34 (36, 38, 40) sts.
Knit all sts in the round until sleeves are appr. 2”/5cm shorter than the desired length from armpit.
For the sample cardigan there were 50 rows of Stockinette Stitch in total.
RIBBING
Switch to the smaller needles.
R1: knit all sts.
Size S:
R2: (k1, k2tog x 8)x twice = 18sts left.
Size M:
R2: k2tog x 18 = 18sts left.
Size L:
R2: (k1, k2tog x 9)x twice = 20sts left.
Size XL:
R2: k2tog x 20 = 20sts left.
All sizes:
R3: (k1, p1)x until the end of the round
R4-9: as R3
R10 (elastic Bind Off): k1, (p1, pass the last st from the right needle over; k1, slip this st back to the left needle, k2tog tbl)x until 1 stitch is left on the needles.
Cut the yarn leaving an appr. 6”/15cm tail. Pass it through the last loop and tighten.
FINISHING
Weave in ends. Wash the sweater in lukewarm water. Block it, laying flat to dry.
