ARDEA MINI SCARF

Decorated with caliper cables reminiscent of dancing great blue herons – birds from the Ardea genus – this mini scarf is a perfect project for that special skein of yarn in your stash, even if it's not a full one.

Ardea Scarf is worked from tip to tip with built-in i-cord edging. Both the width and the length are adjustable, so it's easy to make a piece that suits your taste. The scarf can be tied as a kerchief, wrapped around the neck twice for extra warmth, worn as a headband, a tie, or a bow on a handbag ⚘

Instructions are both charted and written out, with video for caliper cables provided.

YARN

  • Up to 200yds / 185m of fingering weight yarn

  • You can use lace weight yarn held double or combined with a fluff, or a different yarn weight altogether (the size of the scarf will change in this case)

  • Sample scarf: Nigh Fine from Purl Soho (100% cashmere; 448yds / 410m, 1.75oz / 50g) in color Heirloom White, held double. This yarn is labeled as a light fingering weight but is actually a true lace weight, so holding it double achieved a fingering weight gauge

NEEDLES

  • US 3 / 3.25mm straight or circular needles

  • Swatch to determine the needle size that helps to fit the gauge. Although gauge is not crucial for this pattern, note that differences in it will affect the stitch definition, drape, and size of the scarf

GAUGE

  • 31 sts and 36 rows in 4" / 10cm in caliper cable pattern, blocked

NOTIONS

  • Blocking mats and pins

  • Tapestry needle

FINISHED SIZES

  • Width 2.75" /7cm, adjustable in 1.5" / 4cm increments

  • Length 50" / 128cm, fully adjustable
